Kittens Go to College, The Incredible Sex Revolution, and On Her Bed of Roses, provides the screenplay for this tender tale of lesbian loving.
Her big, bosomy girlfriend Brigitte (YVONNE D’ANGERS, a peculiar mix of Mamie Van Doren, Jayne Mansfield, and Lonnie Anderson!) doesn’t have any problems with getting it on. She invites her new boyfriend Grant over for a double date with Sappho and Sven that turns into a major make-out session. But Just when things start to heat up, Sappho screams at Sven: “Why don’t you stop digging at me with that big digger of yours and dig your friends!” (Say, what?) Outraged, Sven proceeds to savagely attack her until Brigitte comes to the rescue with a broom.
That night, Brigitte confides to Sappho about her unfortunate First Sexual Experience: raped by thugs who chanted “Gang bang! Gang bang!” as they attack her. Worse, when she confided to a lecherous middle-aged boyfriend that she was pregnant, he persuaded her to let him screw the baby out of her. Yeah, right. Yet despite the brutality inflicted on her, Brigitte still claims to enjoy sex. Sappho, however, never plans on having any. “I shall be a virgin always…for her sake if not my own,” she explains before detailing a guilt-ridden tale of woe about her mother.
Working at a massage parlor, Brigitte is seduced by Luana, a wealthy client. Luana even shows up at Sappho’s place with another gal-pal, hoping to entice the girls into a good old-fashioned lesbian orgy. But – oops! – Sven walks in on them, calls Sappho a “filthy lesbian,” and the poor girl freaks. Wait, it gets better. While Brigitte goes after Sven to explain, Grant barges in next, intending to rape Sappho! Eventually, it all ends as we expected it would: with Sappho in the sack discovering the rapture of girl-girl love…
Exploitation that tries to be “art-house” – and, for that matter, even pretend to be Swedish – Sappho Darling combines male fantasies of rape and lesbianism with ridiculous dialogue – especially when uttered by Miss D’Angers – to make this marvelously schizoid experience. Adding to the fun are bits by exploitation veteran GARY KENT,the always welcome USCHI DIGART. Though the bulk of Sappho Darling is transferred from a 35mm print that’s seen better days, this version also includes mint-quality “hot” inserts that were cut from most of the theatrical prints that toured the country way back when.
